The debate over whether artificial intelligence (AI) is replacing computer science degrees is long over. At 42 Zurich, AI is not a modular add-on or a passing trend. It is integrated into the curriculum from the ground up – from the very first algorithmic principles right through to the architecture of fully autonomous systems. The result is developers who do not merely operate chatbots, but who design, deploy and critically evaluate the infrastructure, security and logic behind these systems.
From theory to architecture: what you actually learn
What sets the training at 42 Zurich apart is its focus on understanding the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind AI. We don’t just let you enter prompts; we teach you how to build highly precise systems that can hold their own in the real world. The curriculum is divided into three specific project areas that precisely match the requirements of cutting-edge tech companies and innovation labs:
Reliable LLM applications
You’ll learn how to implement ‘function calling’ using ‘constrained decoding’. This means you’ll build tools that translate natural language into 100% valid, executable API calls – even on resource-efficient models.
Source-based RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems
Hallucinations are a no-go in the enterprise world. In this project, you will develop systems that index complex codebases to provide factual, verifiable answers without having to retrain the model.
Autonomous agents
You design “agentic frameworks” that utilise a “thought → code → observation” loop. These systems can solve problems independently, correct themselves and perform well on global benchmarks such as SWE-bench.
The future of developers: leadership rather than replacement
A widespread myth suggests that AI will render IT professionals redundant. At 42 Zurich, we see the opposite: the role of the developer is undergoing a fundamental shift. Those who have mastered the fundamentals will be able to manage the systems that underpin AI. Our peer-to-peer learning model fosters precisely the autonomy and critical thinking that AI cannot replicate.
We do not train users who merely issue commands. We train ‘AI Architects’ who:
- Designing architectures for secure, scalable AI infrastructures.
- Programming the logic layers that enable the AI systems to function.
- Defining the ethical and technical limits of autonomous systems.
A proven track record of excellence: where our students excel
The effectiveness of this approach is evident not only in theory, but also in the results. 42 is the third most innovative educational institution in the world (WURI) and has a global network of over 50 campuses. Our graduates now work at leading companies such as OpenAI, NVIDIA, Google, AWS and Apple.
Our students regularly demonstrate this at international hackathons as well:
- 1st place at the Gemini AI Hackathon in Paris (March 2026).
- 1st place at the IPAI x HI! PARIS Hackathon in Heilbronn.
- 1st place at the DigiEduHack in Prague out of 800 submitted projects.
- 1st place at the BNB Hack in Abu Dhabi with a solution for blockchain access and DeFi looping.
These achievements prove that we are training students who are not only keeping pace, but shaping the future of technology.
Launch your career in the AI era
Do you want to learn how to build AI systems, rather than just reacting to them? Would you like to become part of a community that embraces freedom, autonomy and technical excellence?
The days when we simply ‘used’ AI are over. The era of building it has begun.
