Can I interrupt the test and continue later?

No, the test must be completed in one go. It is important that you take enough time to complete the test in peace.

How will I know if I have passed the online test?

Once you have successfully completed the test, you will receive an e-mail inviting you to the next step: check-in.

What is the check-in?

The check-in is a personal interview at 42 Zurich, either on site or virtually. It’s about finding out more about you and making sure you’re a good fit for the school.

Do I need to have programming skills?

No, the check-in does not test your programming skills, but your motivation and whether you are ready for 42’s intensive learning programme.

How can I prepare for the check-in interview?

You do not need to prepare for the check-in, but it can be helpful to be prepared for questions about your motivation, interest in technology and readiness for a challenging learning environment.

When will I know if I have been accepted to the next step?

After check-in, you will be informed by email whether you have been admitted to the next stage – the Piscine.

What is the Piscine?

The Piscine is a 4-week intensive programming course that introduces you to the basics of coding.

What does ‘Piscine’ mean?

‘Piscine’ is the French word for swimming pool. The idea is that you are thrown into the ‘cold water’ of programming and during this time you can see whether the teaching method of 42 Zurich suits you.

Do I need previous knowledge of programming for the Piscine?

No, prior knowledge is not required. The Piscine is designed for you to learn the basics of programming through practical exercises and learning together.

How many hours per day do I need to plan for the Piscine?

The Piscine is basically a full-time programme. However, you can decide for yourself when and how often you want to be on site. The school is open 24/7, even at weekends. It’s a challenge, but it offers you a great learning opportunity.

What happens if I successfully complete the Piscine?

After successfully completing the Piscine, you will be accepted into the regular programme of 42 Zurich.

Can I do another activity during the Piscine?

In principle, yes. However, you should be able to be on site for at least 4 hours a day.

What is the timetable for the entire application process?

The application process can take several weeks to months, depending on your availability for check-in and the start dates of the Piscine. It is recommended that you take the online test early to ensure that you can plan the next steps in good time.

How does the selection process for 42 Zurich work?

The application starts with an online logic game. Afterwards, you will meet with 42 Zurich and then you will be invited to a four-week ‘piscine’ where you will learn the basics of programming under real study conditions. It is up to you to decide whether the type of learning at 42 Zurich suits you.

When should I enrol?

After completing the Piscine, you must enrol for the main programme in the same year to ensure a seamless transition. The next Piscine dates will be published on our website.

Curriculum

How long does the programme take?

The undergraduate programme usually takes around 18 months for full-time study, but students can take between 9 – 24 months depending on their own pace. The specialisation can take up to five years.

Core Curriculum

What is the Core Curriculum?

The Core Curriculum forms the core of the training programme at 42 Zurich. It teaches you the basic skills in programming as well as soft skills such as problem solving, teamwork and independence. You will work on various projects that will gradually lead you deeper into the world of coding.

How long does the Core Curriculum take?

The Core Curriculum usually lasts between 12 and 18 months, depending on how quickly you complete the projects. You learn at your own pace and can adapt your studies at any time. However, you must complete a certain number of projects in a certain amount of time in order to stay on the programme.

What topics are covered in the core curriculum?

The projects cover a wide range of programming skills, including C programming, algorithms, data structures, networks, Unix, web development and much more. You will also learn how to work on real software projects and develop your own solutions.

How is assessment carried out in the Core Curriculum?

There are no traditional exams or grades. Instead, your projects are peer-reviewed by other students, which means that you receive feedback from your fellow students and give feedback on their projects yourself.

Do I have to be present at the school during the core curriculum?

Yes, the majority of learning at 42 Zurich takes place on site, as the exchange with other students and working together on projects is an essential part of the learning process.

Can I study at another 42 campus during my degree programme?

After completing your basic studies, you have the option of changing campuses if this is organisationally possible. You can then continue your studies at another 42 campus worldwide .

Can previous programming experience accelerate the programme?

Yes, if you already have programming experience, you may be able to progress more quickly through the curriculum, as it is project-based and self-directed. However, programming skills are not a prerequisite to study the programme!

First internship

When does the first internship take place?

After completing the core curriculum, you will complete your first internship. This usually takes place after 12 to 18 months of study.

How do I find an internship?

42 Zurich has a network of partner companies that you can apply to. Alternatively, you can also look for internships on your own. The school will support you with your application and preparation. However, it is also up to the students to proactively establish networks.

How long does the internship last?

What will I learn during the internship?

Are the internships at partner companies guaranteed and paid?

Specialisation

What is the specialisation?

After your first internship, you will return to 42 Zurich to begin your specialisation phase. In this phase, you choose from various advanced projects and subject areas to focus on a specific field in programming or technology.

What specialisations are there?

The specialisations vary and depend on the current technologies and market requirements. Possible areas include, for example, artificial intelligence, cyber security, blockchain, game development, data science or mobile app development.

How long does the specialisation take?

The duration is not fixed. You can also work part-time and come back for life. However, the specialisation usually lasts 2 years and a maximum of 5 years.

Second internship

What is the second internship?

The second internship takes place after the specialisation phase and serves to apply your advanced skills in a real working environment. It gives you the chance to work in a specialised area and prepare you for your professional career.

How does the second internship differ from the first?

While the first internship serves to gain initial practical experience, the second internship focuses on your specialisation. You work in an area that is closely related to the topics you learnt in the specialisation phase.

How long does the second internship last?

Will I receive support in my job search after completing the curriculum?

Yes, 42 Zurich will support you in your job search by giving you access to a broad network of partner companies and preparing you for the application and interview process. You will also benefit from the experience and contacts of other students and alumni.

How good are my chances of finding a permanent position after graduation?

The chances of finding a permanent position are very good. 42 Zurich has an excellent reputation worldwide, and many graduates find a job in the tech industry during or shortly after their first internship. After the second internship, we have a 100% employment rate.

Living in Zurich

How high is the cost of living in Zurich?

Living in Zurich is expensive. The average monthly expenditure for a single person is around CHF 2,500 to CHF 3,000, which includes rent, food, transport and other basic expenses. The rent for a one-bedroom flat in the city centre is between CHF 1,700 and CHF 3,000, while the rent outside the city centre is between CHF 1,300 and CHF 2,200.

What options are there for cheap accommodation in Zurich?

There is no on-campus accommodation, but organisations such as WOKO and JUWO offer affordable rooms for students. The rent at WOKO is between CHF 400 and CHF 700 per month, while JUWO offers unfurnished rooms at a slightly lower price. You can also find flat adverts on sites such as wgzimmer.ch.

How much does food and transport cost in Zurich?

Learning at 42 Zurich

What is special about the learning method at 42?

42 uses an innovative peer-to-peer learning method without teachers or lectures. Students work on real projects and assess each other. This not only deepens technical knowledge, but also encourages teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking.

What are the age restrictions?

Which programming languages will I learn at 42?

Can I work while studying?

Can I set up my own start-up during the programme?

Yes, entrepreneurship is supported by the 42 network. Around 12% of graduates start their own business.

Can I use parts of the code I write during my studies for my GitHub portfolio?

Yes, it is possible to present parts of the code you write during your studies in your GitHub portfolio, as long as they are not proprietary projects or confidential content. Many students use their projects to showcase their skills on GitHub, and 42 encourages this. As long as they are non-confidential projects, you can share your code in your portfolio or in open source projects.

Does 42 Zurich offer visa support for international students?
